A Spring-Cleaning Checklist to Help Give Your Home the Seasonal Refresh It Needs
Spring cleaning and decluttering - I think we all have a love/hate relationship with these two tasks. We love when it’s done but we hate doing it. We created this printable checklist that helps to prioritize and organize tasks that need to be completed in each room in your home.
Personally, we have found that blocking out a solid day or a whole weekend to just buckle down and get it all done is the best way to do it. If you don’t have this time, completing a room a day can be helpful too. Our checklists are setup to make sure you’re effectively and efficiently tackling the different areas of your house.
Materials
Like any good project, you want to make sure you have all of the materials and tools you need before you get started. Feel free to check out the products that we love to use, but you’ll definitely want to make sure you have the general materials below available to use:
Multi-Surface Cleaner
Microfiber Cloths
Baking soda
Vacuum
Mop
Dish Soap
Sponges
White Distilled Vinegar
Disinfecting Wipes
Before starting any type of deep clean, we always recommend tidying up the area first. Putting away any items that are just laying around, so you can really get down to the nitty gritty.
Areas You’ll Want to Target in Every Room
1. Clutter
We find it beneficial to combine deep cleaning with decluttering. Evaluate the items in each room and determine if there’s items you no longer use or need. Or if you just need to reorganize differently to make the space feel less busy and cluttered. If you’re looking for more tips on decluttering, check out this post.
2. Dust
I don’t know about y’all, but we despise dust. No matter what you do, it just always comes back. We recommend starting from the top and working your way down. Meaning, start with the ceiling and high areas - ceiling fans, top of cabinets, high shelves, etc. As annoying as it may seem to remove everything on a shelve, it is the best way to get your dusting done. It’s helpful to dust each item as your remove them too.
3. Vacuum
This task it pretty self explanatory. Since most of us don’t do a deep vacuuming every time we clean, this is a good time to do that. You’ll want to make sure to move your furniture to get to those hard to reach spots, like under the couches and dressers, behind the fridge and stove, etc.
4. Mop
Another task most people are familiar with. In recent years (post covid to be exact), light has been shedded on how important it is to disinfect our floors because our shoes bring in a lot of germs and bacteria. There’s also been a lot of innovation in the mop space, they’ve definitely made some fancier models since Grandma was ringing out her mop in the sink - check out some that we have found.
5. Clean Baseboards
Speaking of Grandmas, mine was actually who taught me how this task is done. This is definitely an overlook task in most people’s home because a lot of times these are covered by furniture. So while you’re doing your spring cleaning, be sure to pull out your furniture and vacuum those baseboards. Using a dust rag and an all-purpose cleaner will do the trick to get anything else still on there.
6. Rugs
If you own your own rug cleaner, a rotary shampoo machine or a hot-water extraction machine, great! If not, you can always rent one or hire a service to complete this task. We suggest doing this at least every other year to keep your rugs looking like new. For smaller rugs, like runners and doormats, most of these are able to go right in the washing machine. For larger area rugs, we suggest bringing them outside, using a large brush and a little bit of laundry detergent and your gardening hose to get those clean and freshened up.
7. Windows and Window Screens
You can use a simple glass cleaner or windex to clean your windows. And warm water and dishwashing soap to clean the screens. Once clean, rinse them thoroughly with water.
8. Window Furnishings and Pillow Covers
These are probably items in your home that don’t get cleaned often, but should be every once in a while as they can accumulate dust and odors from around the house. Most materials can be put in the washing machine, but just double check because some may need to be dry cleaned.
